Makoyo Village began with one man who never forgot home.
Life eventually took him abroad to study and build a career. The distance grew, but the connection never faded. No matter how far he went, the land, the people, and the community that raised him remained a constant part of him — a pull that distance could never erase.
He could have moved on completely. Instead, he chose to build something back home from wherever he stood. Not waiting until he returned. Not waiting for perfect conditions. Starting with what he had, where he was, for the community he had never stopped caring about.
Humphrey Malinda grew up in Kasikeu, Makueni County — in the semi-arid drylands of southeastern Kenya where drought is common, opportunities are limited, and many young people grow up believing that certain dreams belong somewhere else.

OUR STORY
Makoyo Village began with one man who never forgot home.
Today, Makoyo Village is led by a local team on the ground in Kasikeu, guided by a founder whose heart never truly left — proof that you do not always have to be physically present to help transform the place that shaped you.
Over time, Makoyo Village has grown into a living ecosystem of regenerative agriculture, water resilience, wildlife conservation, cultural preservation, youth empowerment, experiential learning, and warm rural hospitality — all rooted in the same community, the same land, and the same belief that rural places can become centres of innovation, dignity, and hope.
Everything here has been built through community effort, local ownership, and an unshakeable commitment to creating something meaningful for future generations.

Our Program
COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
Makoyo Village drives meaningful impact through community-led programmes focused on resilience, culture, conservation, and youth empowerment. Visitors are warmly invited to participate in many of these living initiatives.
💧 Makoyo Integrated Water Safety System
Our community-built dam captures an estimated 4–5 million litres of rainwater annually, making year-round farming possible in one of Kenya's most drought-prone regions. We have developed a four-stage treatment system using moringa seed coagulation, community-built biosand filtration, and solar disinfection (SODIS) — producing significantly safer drinking water with zero electricity and zero imported chemicals. Visitors can tour the full water system. It is one of the most quietly remarkable things you will see in rural Kenya.
🌱 Makoyo Farms — Regenerative Agriculture
Climate-smart farming using harvested rainwater, composting, intercropping, and agroforestry. Our 3-acre demonstration farm produces plantains and vegetables year-round and serves as a hands-on learning site. Over 500 youth, farmers, and students have trained here since 2021.
🦤 Makoyo Conservation Programme
Breeding and protecting ostriches and emus — ratites that are particularly rare in Kenya. Our conservation programme combines active wildlife breeding with CBC-aligned school education visits. Our goal is not just to keep these birds but to demonstrate that community-based conservation of rare species is viable in rural Kenya.
🏛️ Bantu Cultural Centre & Museum
Preserving and celebrating Akamba and Bantu heritage through artefacts, oral history, traditional architecture, and community storytelling. A living cultural resource for visitors, researchers, school groups, and the Kasikeu community itself.
🎓 Creative Roots Academy & Digital Roots Lab
Youth skills development in arts, performing arts, digital storytelling, and entrepreneurship through the Creative Roots Academy. The Digital Roots Lab trains young people in digital civic advocacy on climate justice, cultural rights, and local governance — building the next generation of community voices.
🏥 Makoyo Mama Rider
A motorcycle ambulance programme improving maternal and emergency health response in a community where medical facilities are distant and roads are rough. Fast emergency transport saves lives in communities that have historically had no reliable access to it. .
🌿 Makoyo Climate Resilience Hub
Community training and knowledge-sharing in water conservation, agroforestry, drought adaptation, and climate-smart farming — building long-term adaptive capacity across Makueni County.
🎒 Makoyo CBC Experiential Learning Programme
Structured school visit programmes aligned with Kenya's Competency Based Curriculum, offering practical environmental, cultural, agricultural, and conservation learning that classrooms cannot replicate. Available to primary and secondary schools throughout the year.
📚 Makoyo Community Library
Knowledge access for a community where books and learning resources have historically been scarce. Open to community members and supported by visiting volunteers and donors.
🏆 Makoyo Farmers Day — Annual Agricultural Showcase
An annual celebration of farming, food, and community achievement — bringing together local farmers, youth, and visitors to share knowledge, showcase produce, and strengthen community bonds.
⚽ Makoyo Football Club
Community football bringing youth together, building discipline, teamwork, and community pride in Kasikeu.
🌟 Makoyo Second Chance Campus (Future Initiative)
A planned programme for youth who have fallen out of the formal education system — offering skills, mentorship, and pathways back to learning and livelihoods. family legacy endures across generations.
